TVS-E`s Tumkur plant becomes QS 9000 compliant

TVS-E is no stranger to the rigorous QS-9000 Quality system. In the month of July 2001, The Chennai plant of TVS-E received this certification. Following this success the Tumkur plant adopted this system in the first half of 2002 and TUV Rheinland held the final audit during May 2002. The certification has been issued now and is valid till September 2005.

The Tumkur Plant of TVSE manufactures a range of products including UPS, Inverters, Rectifiers, Keyboards and PCB Assemblies. The plant comprises an EHTP Zone for exports and a separate DTA location for supplies to the domestic market. The PCB Assembly facility is equipped with automated lines for insertion and SMT boards.

Both the manufacturing plants of TVS-E form the TVS eServices division which is a BPO Service Provider offering a range of services from design to manufacturing. TVS eServices comprises separate business units for electronic manufacturing services, power design solutions and sourcing services including an online auction portal. Its customers include multinationals like GE, Tyco, Victron Energie and Indian brand owners like Zipfone, Simputer and Sundaram Clayton.

Commenting on this proud moment A Karunakaran, President, TVS eServices said, "We continue to be one of the few non-automotive companies in India to receive this certification. Since TVS-E is committed to quality it has chosen to adopt this rigorous standard, even though it is not currently demanded by the Electronics industry".

The requirements for QS-9000 certification are aimed at ensuring customer focus, maintaining consistency in systems and processes and take into account the continuous improvements that are taking place in the company.

The evolution of QS-9000

The ISO when introduced, represented the first ever global common standard for Quality Management Systems, to monitor adherence to a scheduled process, but in time was found to do little for improvement in product quality and customer focus.

The Big 3 Auto majors - GM, Ford and Chrysler increasingly found the ISO system inadequate. Each worked with numerous suppliers and shared several as well. Suppliers were finding it difficult to cope with individual systems with unique specifications. The Big 3 joined hands to develop one system, which would benefit the supplier and build a common process that would cater to each of their requirements.

They took the ISO 9000 chassis and built it up. They used all the 20 clauses in the ISO 9000, but added specific techniques and requirements, as against the general guidelines suggested by ISO documentation.

Based on the ISO 9000 clauses, they made the major Section 1 far more stringent, and built a Section 2, which dealt with customer specific requirements.

Business Results: QS-9000 places a high degree of importance on business results, which are expected to show positive trends. This constitutes one of many checks built into the QS, to maintain focus on continuous improvement.

The QS has a special 'business planning' section, that provides guidelines on business planning measures and targets to check the success of the plan. The company level data is derived from the criteria laid down in the business planning stage.

Customer Satisfaction: QS guidelines clearly state that customer satisfaction must be measured objectively and towards a goal of continuous improvement. After the Big 3 auto majors came together to develop the QS 9000 standard in 1995 - 96, it quickly grew to become the accepted auto industry standard. Today, the QS-9000 is becoming mandatory to supply to virtually any major auto manufacturer, anywhere in the world.
